A note from the editor
Confession: I started this newsletter because I wanted to meet more people like me. Though I majored in computer science and now work as a product manager in the tech industry, my main motive for learning to code was never about the technology. It was always about the people. You see, I had the privilege of living in Baltimore during my college years, which gave me a front seat into some of our nation’s prevailing social issues and—just as importantly—the organizations working towards solving them. I’ve been exploring ways to use my tech skills to support causes that benefit low income Americans ever since.
It took me a while to find this space because I didn’t know where to look. The turning point was when I had a chance to attend Techstars’ Economic Mobility Accelerator’s Demo Day last year. I saw startups launching projects that I wanted to be a part of. I met people who shared the same dream I had of how technology could shape our society. And it made me wonder: why isn’t it easier to discover these opportunities? and how can we make even more of this happen?
This newsletter is my attempt to address precisely that. I want to make it easier for people to get involved and share knowledge about tackling poverty. Something about it feels even more pressing in these times, and I’ve always believed in the power of people, together, to create meaningful change. And if you too share these beliefs, welcome aboard. Thank you for being here.
With gratitude,
Nancy
